Residential care and nursing homes

Residential care and nursing homes are for people over the age of 18 who are no longer able to live independently in their own home due to physical or learning disabilities, sight or hearing loss, frailty or illness.  In certain circumstances, short term places can be available for people who are recovering from illness after being discharged from hospital, or to give carers a break from their caring responsibilities.

Help with considering your options

If you are unsure about moving to a care home, you can make an appointment with Adult Social Care to receive an assessment of your needs.  The assessment may help to consider the options available to you.  Following the assessment, if you decide that a residential or nursing home is an option you would explore, Adult Social Care can help with providing details of homes that may best meet your needs.

Finding out more about residential or nursing homes

If you think moving to a care home could be an option for you or someone you care for, contact the home you are interested in and arrange a visit.  Before you visit the home, make a list of things you would like to ask the home manager for more information about.

All registered residential or nursing homes are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).  You can search for care homes on the CQC website at and obtain a copy of the home’s CQC inspection reports.  You can also visit the care home’s website for further details.

Help with the costs

The cost of residential and nursing homes varies, often depending on the type of facilities provided and the amount and type of care you need.  You can find out if you qualify for financial help with care home fees by contacting the Access and Response Team to request an assessment from Adult Social Care.  There is no fee for obtaining an assessment.
