Thinking about how to use your bedroom

Do you struggle to get in and out of bed? Have you experienced any falls out of bed?

You can be assessed by an occupational therapist about what things matter to you. It may be that there is equipment that could support you.  For example, a bed rail or a mattress elevator.  A bed rail can be attached either under a mattress, bed or the frame of the bed.

Are you unsteady on your feet or worried about falling out of bed?

If you are known to Adult Social Care, your worker will visit your home and have a chat with you about what’s important to you.  From the chat, it may be that there is assistive technology that could support you. If that’s the case, and if you agree, we can refer you to Careline who will be happy to carry out an assessment and determine which assistive technology might be right for you.

An example of assistive technology is a bed sensor placed under a mattress that will trigger an alert to the Careline team if you have not returned to your bed within a specified time period. Careline will then contact you to check if you need help.

If you are not known to Adult Social Care, you can self-refer to Careline. Contact Careline on 020 7974 1491 Option 4.

Do you get out of bed in the night and have difficulty finding the light switch in the dark, and worry about falling?

You can be assessed by an occupational therapist about what things matter to you.

If may also be that a night light could be plugged into a socket in your bedroom or hallway before you go to bed in the evening. A night light provides a gentle soothing light that does not disturb your sleep. Night lights are available to purchase at a small cost in many high street stores.

Do you have limited strength or movement in your arms and legs, and need help getting dressed?

You can be assessed by an occupational therapist about what’s important to you. They can observe what difficulties you are experiencing and consider solutions to these issues.

Do you have epilepsy?

If you are known to Adult Social Care we will visit your home and have a chat with you about what’s important to you. From the chat, it may be that there is assistive technology that could support you. If that’s the case, and if you agree, we can refer you to Careline who will be happy to carry out an assessment and determine which assistive technology might be right for you.

An example of assistive technology is an epilepsy sensor that triggers an alert if you are having a seizure. An epilepsy sensor allows your carer or family member to check on you if they get an alert rather than doing regular ‘just in case’ checks.

You decide who the alert should go to, either your carer, a family member or to the Careline monitoring centre.  Contact can be made with you to check you’re okay and if needed, phone the emergency services.

If you are not known to Adult Social Care, you can self-refer to Careline. Contact Careline on 020 7974 1491 Option 4.
